At Cornerstone Pediatrics, we are dedicated to providing friendly, comprehensive, and professional care to our patients, from birth to adulthood. We strive to make a difference by fostering a strong relationship with our patients and their families. Building on the knowledge, wisdom, and experience we’ve developed over the last ten years, we work hard to build partnerships with our parents so we can work together to develop the right healthcare plan for your child.

We love living and working in El Paso, and feel a strong connection to the communities we serve. We understand your challenges, fears, and concerns, and we are ready to work with you to help you provide the best care for your child.

When you visit the emergency room or Urgent Care, your child will most likely not be examined by a pediatrician. While general practitioners and emergency room doctors and staff are all competent and skillful doctors, your child deserves to be seen by a medical professional specifically trained in pediatric medicine. The physicians and staff at Cornerstone Pediatrics have focused their entire career on the care and treatment of children.

MEET OUR TEAM
DR. AKINTOLUWA AKINJAIYEJU
​
NEC Pediatrics was founded by Dr. Akintoluwa Akinjaiyeju. Dr. Akin is a Board Certified Pediatrician with some international experience. He completed his medical education training from Gdansk Medical Academy in Poland in 1994, under a Nigerian federal government scholarship program.
​
He completed a one-year residency in Poland, and then returned to Nigeria, where he concluded another internship in tropical medicine, and practiced for 3 years as a Family Practitioner. In 1999, he moved to the USA, and, in 2004, completed a specializing internship and residency program in Pediatrics at Texas Tech University in El Paso. He initially joined another medical group in town, before finally beginning his solo practice with Cornerstone Pediatrics Clinic.

Dr. Akin believes medical doctors are vital to any community, but even more so in a medically underserved area like Northeast of El Paso. He is proud to provide medical services to residents from all parts of El Paso.

JESSICA CANALES
​
Jessica Canales is board certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. Jessica graduated from Texas Tech Health Science University in 2011, as a Certified Pediatric Nurse. She initially began her career in health care as a pharmacy technician at a community hospital in El Paso, TX. While working in the pharmacy, Jessica completed her nursing education at El Paso Community College in 2009. She then went on to earn a Master’s in nursing as a nurse practitioner after having completed internships at various outpatient locations, including UMC Ysleta. Jessica also gained several years of experience in general pediatrics during her tenure at El Paso Children’s Hospital.
STEVEN R. IBAÑEZ, M.S., CPNP-PC | PEDIATRIC NURSE PRACTITIONER

Steven R. Ibañez is board certified by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. He attended and graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso. Steven is an El Paso native, and begin his pediatric career at El Paso Children’s Hospital where he worked in general pediatrics, pediatric operating room, and pediatric gastroenterology. He completed internships at various inpatient and outpatient sites such as Cornerstone Pediatrics, Pediatric specializations in gastroenterology and urology. Having worked several years at El Paso Children’s Hospital, Steven brings years of pediatric care to Cornerstone Pediatrics.

Ten years ago, we made the decision to strike out on our own by establishing Cornerstone Pediatrics. Fed up with the red tape and bureaucracy of so many medical institutions, we founded Cornerstone Pediatrics on the idea that the practice of medicine is not just a business, it’s a calling.

At the end of the day, we measure our success in the health and wellbeing of our patients and their families. When we’re lucky, we get to see our patients grow from newborns to young adults – and we are there, every step of the way, providing not just healthcare, but life-care. We love the El Paso community, and we plan on being here for years to come.
